Settings and the MOTD editor
Game settings, the MOTD editor, the icon, the world, version, address and custom domain, region, hub listing and internet access.
Settings has forms for what owners change most. Press Save changes; each value is checked, and nothing is saved if one is not allowed. The panel says when a restart is needed.
Basics
- Server icon: PNG or JPEG under 2 MB, resized to 64 by 64.
- Difficulty, Game mode for new players, Most players at once (no cap on any plan; only memory limits it).
- PvP, Hardcore and Allow flying.
The MOTD editor
The message under your server's name in the server list. A preview shows how it looks as you type.
- The colour and style buttons insert
&codes at your cursor, for example&afor green.ab34sets any colour. - Only two lines show, and about 59 characters fit on a line. The editor warns you past either.
World
Seed (new worlds only), view and simulation distance (2 to 32 chunks; lower uses less memory), and spawn protection. Free servers start at a view distance of 6. Borders are set per world in Worlds.
Version and software
Pick Paper, Purpur or Vanilla and a version, press Check what would break, then switch. See Versions and software. Two switches sit here:
- Let Bedrock players join. See Bedrock crossplay.
- Let older Java versions join: down to 1.8.
Address and domain
- Your free address always works, even with a custom domain.
- Custom domain (paid plans): type a domain you own and press Save domain. The panel lists the DNS records to add where you bought it, each with a copy button. Then press Check now. Changes can take up to an hour. One custom domain per server.
- Region: where the server runs. During the beta only North America is open, so Move to is refused. Keep it in this region means it never starts anywhere else.
- Show in the hub's server list: off for new servers. See Your server in our hub.
Internet access
Your server reaches the internet only through an allowlist. To ask for a site a plugin needs, type
it (for example api.example.com) and why, then press Ask for access. We review each request.
Only exact site names on port 443 can be asked for, not IP addresses or whole domains. An allowed
site works from the next start. You can have 10 requests waiting at once.
Raw files
Edit server.properties as a file opens it in Files. Settings we manage, such as the server port and online mode, cannot be changed, because players could no longer reach your server.
Memory changes
More memory applies at once. Less memory applies at the next start, so a running game is never cut short.
