Files and SFTP

The file manager (editor with checks, history, search, pins, zip), SFTP logins and keys, and upload rules.

Every plan gets full access to your server's files, through the file manager or SFTP. Both reach only your own server's folder.

The file manager

Open Files.

  • Upload files, Upload a folder, or drop files and folders on the list. Tick Unzip .zip files after uploading to unpack zips.
  • New folder and New file.
  • Each row's more button: Edit, Rename, Move, Copy, Download, Zip, Unzip here and Delete. Tick several rows to act on them together.
  • Search finds files by name. Tick Also search inside files to search their text.

Deleting is permanent. Backups taken before still have the file.

The editor

  • Colours and checks YAML, JSON and .properties files as you type, for example a key used twice, tabs in YAML, or pvp=yes (must be true or false).
  • Save or Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac). Config changes usually need a restart.
  • If someone else saved the file after you opened it, your save is refused. Copy your edits, reopen and save again.
  • Files up to 5 MB open in the browser. Download bigger ones.
  • History keeps every earlier version saved from the panel, your AI, a setup or a restore. View or Restore one; the replaced version is kept too.

Pinned files

Press a file's pin to keep it in Pinned at the top of Files. Pins belong to the server, so your team sees the same ones. A server can have 12. A pin follows a rename or move made in the panel. A pin never gives anyone access to a file they could not already open.

Rules that protect your server

  • Plugin jars go in through Plugins, which checks them. The panel's file manager refuses to put a .jar into plugins, whether you upload, move, copy or unzip it. SFTP has no such check; see Files you upload by hand.
  • Disk: about 5 GB on the free plan. We warn you at 80% and 95%. When full, saves and uploads are refused until you free space.
  • Shortcut files (links) show in the list but are never opened or followed.
  • Internet access: your server reaches only sites on our allowlist. Ask for another in Settings.
  • Uploads: each upload link is for one file and works for an hour. Download links work for an hour, only for you.
  • Worlds: use the world upload in Worlds. A zip unpacked over a world is treated the same way: the server must be stopped and the worlds are backed up first.

While the server sleeps

You can browse, edit, download and back up a sleeping server's files. If its machine cannot be reached, the panel says so: start the server, then try again.

SFTP

Use an SFTP app such as FileZilla, WinSCP or Cyberduck. Everyone gets their own login per server: the owner, and team members whose role includes files.

  1. Open Files and press SFTP details. It shows the host, port and your username, plus an address to paste into your app.
  2. Press Make a password and copy it. It is shown once. Making a new one replaces it and ends connections using the old one.
  3. Connect with your app.

Your username is the server's name, a dot and a short code, for example my-server.1a2b3c4d.

If SFTP details says SFTP isn't open on this host yet, use the file manager.

Keys

Paste the line from your .pub file under Add a public key. Ed25519, ECDSA, and RSA of 2048 bits or more work. Up to 10 keys. Never paste a private key; the panel refuses one.

Turning it off

Remove password keeps your keys. Turn off my SFTP login removes your password and keys and ends your connections.

Good to know

  • Your login stops at once if your role loses files, you leave the team, or the server is archived or deleted.
  • Every sign-in, upload, download, rename and delete is in the activity log.
  • SFTP cannot run commands, open a shell, forward ports or make links.
  • After many wrong passwords from one place, that place waits a few minutes. Nobody is locked out for good, and a key still works.

Files you upload by hand

Jars you put in plugins over SFTP skip the plugin page's check. We look at your plugins folder when the server starts and flag known bad files for a person to review. Use Upload a jar on the Plugins page when you can; it scans the jar first.
